Alternative Oxidase

The terminal OXIDOREDUCTASE in the plant mitochondrial electron transport chain utilized in the alternative pathway of respiration. It limits REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES production and bypasses ELECTRON TRANSPORT COMPLEX III and ELECTRON TRANSPORT COMPLEX IV to keep metabolic homeostasis during PHYSIOLOGICAL STRESS.
